Southern is a comprehensive neighborhood high school (grades 9-12) providing educational programming to any student living
within its boundaries. We boast a diverse student body. Approximately thirty percent of the population are students whose
native language is not English. This presents an opportunity to share the international nature of our population, so that
all can celebrate each other’s unique customs, festivals, dress and culture. The full range of programming at Southern
provides all students with the opportunity to earn a college preparatory high school diploma. The course offerings also expose
students to a number of different occupational paths, including: Hospitality, Health Careers, Law, Information Technology
and Finance via an academy structure. Within the academies are opportunities to earn industry-recognized certifications, providing
students with readily employable skills.
The 2007-2008 school year will be very exciting at Southern. We are celebrating our 100th Anniversary as a high school.
The second 100 years begins by offering: four Advanced Placement courses, music, JROTC, drama, debate and chess clubs, a television
station, various 21st century technology courses, a Red Cross Club, a choir, a drumline and a full menu of varsity sports
for males and females. In addition, our sports “Super Site” will be completed by the end of this school year.
Southern epitomizes what a high school should be. It is a house of learning that is complete with all of the “extras”
that make it the proud cornerstone of South Philadelphia. We invite you to visit us and see for yourself.
